Cosatu's leadership went against own members - analyst

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) affiliates are now warning the African National Congress (ANC) to keep President Jacob Zuma from attending the federation’s mid-term meeting scheduled for May.

The largest union belonging to Cosatu, the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) is leading the charge to stop President Zuma from attending and are instead calling for deputy president, Cyril Ramaphosa to attend and speak at the meeting.

Political Analyst, Dr. Sethulego Matebesi warns that if Cosatu ignores Nehawu's warning, history will repeat itself and teach the ANC a lesson.

Matebesi says the message was clear that several Cosatu affiliates were opposed to President Zuma attending the May Day rally in Bloemfontein.

Cosatu's leadership went against its own members.

I think the President's advisors at a very personal level will warn him against attending.

Matebesi adds that he hopes the President will be advised against attending Cosatu's mid-term meeting. He says the ANC, to an extent has itself to blame for the criticism and booing at the May Day rally.

Matebesi says the surprising element was that heckling in a province such as Free State. He added that if it had been in Gauteng he would have expected the anti-Zuma sentiment.

He suggests too that Zuma's planned KZN trip should not be discounted.

One should never underestimate the power of KZN.
