Cape Town: Neighbourhood Safety Teams will target 10 top crime precincts

City of Cape Town safety and security mayoral committee member JP Smith explains the City's plans for to set up Neighbourhood Safety Teams (SNTs)for the ten most crime-affected police precincts in Cape Town.

Smith says the proposal is on the draft budget and will get approval in May.

The City will then immediately start recruitment and plans to roll-out between 90 and 120 extra policing staff in the first of the ten precincts identified.

They hope to complete two police precincts in this financial year, says Smith.

If we keep the unit together and keep it sustained it for at least three years in the first two police precincts, we can take them permanently off the list of the worst crime-affected stations in the City. Because I am tired of seeing those same names appear year after year, and understanding that those poor residents have to bear that crime year after year.

JP Smith, City of Cape Town safety and security mayoral committee member

How to choose? Smith says it is simple. Stick to the crime stats.

Look at the murder rate per 100 000 and then the debate becomes a lot easier, it clearly spells out where the ten stations are with the worst rate of murder. And they also correspond to other indicators.

The new recruits will be law enforcement officers but they are peace officers.

Crime prevention remains the job of Saps job he says. They have 22 000 officers while Metro police only comprise 550. So he says they will target their work carefully.
