Guardians of the Galaxy 2: Smarter, better, funnier

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 comes out this Friday. Book your tickets at Ster-Kinekor Theatres here.

Sequels to great movies are dangerous.

Movie sequels are like a second piece of cake – all the promise of deliciousness that you experienced from the first piece that rarely gets fulfilled.

In fact, you are more likely to get sick.

So you shouldn’t be surprised that my unspoken mantra as I sat down to watch _Guardians _of the Galaxy 2 was, “Please don’t mess this up. Please don’t mess this up. Please don’t mess this up.”

I don’t want to leave you hanging until the very end of this review, so I’ll just tell you right now: They did not mess it up. This film is AWESOME.

It somehow managed to achieve something that I’ve only really seen with _Terminator _2: Judgement Day – it took all the things that made the first movie great and not only redid them, it made them even better.

The jokes are funnier (and there are more of them), the characters are more complex, the action sequences are more intense, and somehow, incredibly, Groot is even cooler.

Seriously, you will fall in love with this big-eyed, little tree.

There is also more depth to the story line – no spoilers here, but I will give you a top tip: if you have some daddy issues, you might want to keep a tissue handy.

Chris Pratt does a great job of towing the line between being the funny guy who also is going through some emotional stuff.

I’m not going to lie, my eyes did get a bit glossy at some points.

There were points when it felt like the movie was trying a little too hard to land the jokes. Pretty much every intense moment is capped with a quip or one-liner that diffuses the tension, but sometimes I felt that they should just leave us in the discomfort of the scene.

But then again…little Groot makes up for all of that.

So, is this movie better than it’s predecessor? Yes.

Is it worth watching? Oh yes. Oh yes definitely.
