43 state institutions owe the Special Investigating Unit R418 million

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) head, Advocate Jan Lekhoa Mothibi, says he wants to speed up the turn around time for investigations into state corruption and maladministration but cannot do so because there state departments who are not paying for services.

Mothibi told Parliament's Justice committee that 43 state institutions owe the SIU R418 million.

EWN Reporter Lindsay Dentlinger says Mothibi wants the SIU to be the premier government department to investigate maladministration and corruption in the state.

But he says they are just not paying their bills. He has gone to Treasury and has even gone to the President to get them to pay up.

At least three-quarters of that money has been owed for more than 90 days already.

Mothibi said the current funding model is not working and his office is trying to come up with a plan to work out a better to get state departments to pay their bills.

Dentlinger adds that the committee wanted to know from Mothibi which departments owe the SIU and what amount is owed. Mothibi did not have that information with him but vowed to submit the names of those departments to the committee.

He said if their resources were bolstered, if everybody was paying their bills on time they could certainly save government a lot of money on legal costs.

Dentlinger explains that Mothibi and the SIU is already in talks with Treasury for assistance.
