Western Cape Premier Helen Zille says she understands that her trip to Singapore cost a lot of money, but hopes it will create jobs.
The Sunday Times revealed that Zille’s trip to Asia - accompanied by her husband Johann Maree and three officials - reportedly cost taxpayers at least R1.1 million.
Zille says R500 000 was paid to Wesgro, a provincial government entity tasked with encouraging economic growth and investment in the Western Cape. The other money was spent on the trip for 5 people who traveled to Singapore.
She says it was the first time that she was accompanied by her husband in her 8 years in office, though he is entitled to come every single time.
Zille says she attended trade, investment and tourism seminars and hopes this will result to job creation.
