[LISTEN] Do we have right to abattoir-free meat?

Africa Melane (standing in the Kieno Kammies) hosted Akim Riemer from Green Gorillas and Toni Brockhaven from Beauty Without Cruelty. The discussion revolved around eating meat and rearing the animals ourselves as a form of accountability and sustainable living.

The ethos behind Adopt A Pig, means that you share that people have a shared responsibility of that animal and the animal would become abattoir-free. If abattoirs had glass windows, perhaps no-one would eat meat...

Akim Riemer, Green Guerillas

The idea behind this approach is that you get to slaughter the animal yourself, after having reared if it a stress-free environment. Africa Melane summed it up by saying that this process allows people to "follow the pig from inception 'til bacon".

However, national chairperson of Beauty Without Cruelty, Toni Brockhaven, said some people prefer "food out of mud and not blood", adding that there are so many food options available.
