Anorexia is not just about being thin, a psychologist explains

Anorexia nervosa is still misunderstood in many social spaces, says clinical psychologist Khosi Jiyane.

As a result of the misconceptions and stigma associated with eating disorder, she says very few social discussions are had about it.

Anorexia Nervosa is a psychological illness with devastating physical consequences.

Some of the characteristics include a low body weight, distorted body image, as well as an intense and obsessive fear of gaining weight.

Jiyane says people can become oblivious to anorexia and the psychological complexities which accompanies it.

Anorexia is one of the highest psychiatric syndromes where the death rate and relapse rate is quite high.

According to Jiyane, anorexia is about more than just a person's physique; it's a serious mental health condition.
