Warning of new card swapping scam called a 'pop-up'

An ATM fraud scam known as “a pop-up‚” has become prominent in the Western Cape as fraudsters con tourists into paying levies to enter public spaces.

Andrew Boraine explains in detail how suspects approach their victim and claim that a permit is needed to enter a specific area and then usher them to an ATM where they swap cards.

Tourists walking through the City are approached and say do you know around the corner there is film shoot taking place and you are going to need a permit to walk through there... and these law abiding unsuspecting visitors say well how do I get a permit and the person will say you can get it for free at an ATM let me help you.

Andrew Boraine, CEO at Western Cape Economic Development Partnership

And that is just another way of swapping the card out and before the visitor knows they have lost R20 000 to R30 000, euro equivalent in their credit card.
