Ardent SA stamp collector makes his mark at American expo

Is stamp collecting dead?

Not if South African philatelist Dr Jannie Hofmeyr has anything to say about it.

A philatelist is a person who loves stamps and the term is used to describe the unique and small community of passionate stamp collectors.

Philatelist collect and study stamps and other postal matter both as a hobby or an investment.

Local stamp collector Dr Jannie Hofmeyr has been a philatelist for years and has just won the regional Grand Prix of stamp collecting in America with a collection of American stamps from the 1860s.

Hofmeyr was also recognised for his stamp collection and research at the annual South African Philatelic Federation stamp exhibition.

He says he began stamp collecting after searching for a hobby for himself as he grew older.

I used to collect stamps when I was a kid... It was only as I got older that I was looking for something to give you a lot of fun.

It's something that you can continue to do, it's not like being a triathlete.

He says he never had any intention of becoming a stamp exhibitor, until he was approached by an American stamp dealer.

Hofmeyr advises that stamp collectors are not allowed to collect stamps from the country they live in and explains why he was drawn to collecting American stamps.
