Calm restored to Coligny as talks continue

North West government officials are expected to visit Coligny after a flare-up of violence in the town on Monday.

Four houses were torched when Pieter Doorewaard and Phillip Shutte, accused of killing 16-year-old Matlhomola Moshoeu, were granted bail of R 5 000 each.

They also say police who took the statements from the accused did it poorly and therefore these are some of the things they want police and government officials to have a look at, and promised to stop the protests temporarily while talks are ongoing.

Meanwhile, deputy general secretary for Cosatu Solly Phetoe previously worked as the provincial secretary in the North West, representing farm workers.

Phetoe says he is come across similar incidents of racism in the area. He has accused government of failing to deal with racial cases until it's too late.

Racism has been very rife in those areas, and I think that the police must investigate this mater in detail.

When I was the provincial secretary of Cosatu in the are of Bekkersdal we had been citing this case of racism when other white people formed what is called Boermag, continued to assault workers and their family members, in particular, African black farm workers in those areas including Coligny.
