Vuwani, Coligny and Eldos violence linked to unmet promises, unresolved traumas

Nomfundo Mogapi, Executive Director at the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation says issues driving violent protests around the country have become worse over time, frustrating citizens.

Long standing protests in Coligny, Vuwani and recently Eldorado Park have raised renewed concerns over a leadership vacuum in South Africa.

Mogapi says it is better for politicians and government not to make promises at all.

The continued failure of not meeting promises is another concern, but the increasing corruption and the reporting around corruption in the country sends a message to communities that the lack of services is not just that there is no resources, they are there but they are not being used properly.

Nomfundo Mogapi, Executive Director at the Centre for the Study of Violence & Reconciliation

We have been talking about the continued unresolved trauma of the past. We should really ignite feelings of people losing their sense of dignity and self worth and the ugly head of racism rearing its head again, as one of the key issues that speaks to that unresolved history.

Nomfundo Mogapi, Executive Director at the Centre for the Study of Violence & Reconciliation

Mogapi says the institute's research reveals what she describes as 'intra- political party dynamics' and fractions within the African National Congress as a catalyst for violence.
