How De Beers uses ‘carbon storage’ tech to offset its emissions

Carbon storage is the process of capturing waste carbon dioxide from, for example, coal fired power stations or mines, transporting it to a storage site and depositing it where it will not enter the atmosphere.

Waste carbon dioxide is usually stored in an underground geological formation.

The aim of carbon storage is to prevent the release of large quantities of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

This is done in order to mitigate the contribution of fossil fuel emissions to climate change and ocean acidification.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed De Beers Project Lead for the Carbon Storage Project Dr Evelyn Mervine for his weekly “The Science Of” feature.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for quotes from it).

We’re looking at a technology that would offset our carbon emissions.

Dr Evelyn Mervine, De Beers

Our carbon emissions come from power use… and our mining vehicles.

Our emissions total two million tons.

Dr Evelyn Mervine, De Beers

Humans emit 40 billion tons of carbon each year… there are about 800 billion tons of carbon in the atmosphere.

Dr Evelyn Mervine, De Beers

Kimberlites naturally interact with carbon.

Dr Evelyn Mervine, De Beers

If you pull CO2 from somewhere it benefits the whole atmosphere.

Dr Evelyn Mervine, De Beers

Once you lock carbon away you don’t have to monitor it.

Dr Evelyn Mervine, De Beers

We can eventually store more carbon than we emit.
