Grade 10 learner makes energy storage device using old computer parts

Katinka Wilkinson, a grade 10 pupil from Cape Town has created an ingenious device using old computer parts.

The flywheel energy storage system was built using recycled hard drives.

What I did was, I took many old hard drives and then I took out the disks and stacked them on top of one another to increase the mass of a larger disk that I placed into one hard drive disk and then I follow up and then use that to generate power to resistance.

The device can only power small resistors like a light bulb or speaker. But if you use that and you scale it up then you can probably provide power to a few light bulbs in your household.
