The Competition Commission has launched an investigation into competitiveness in South Africa's grocery retail sector.
Ninety percent of the South African grocery retail sector is under the control of the four national supermarket chains; Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Spar, and Woolworths.
Competition Commission spokesperson, Sipho Ngwema, says the probe will look at local government bylaws and the impact of bulk buying.
Ngwema says they will also investigate whether the four big retailers distort competition.
Also, we want to to see the emergence of big retail supermarkets into villages, townships... what impact have they had into small businesses in those areas.— Sipho Ngwema, Competition Commission head of communications
Public hearings are currently being held in Cape Town, and other provinces will follow.
