Creator of online suicide game reportedly says he's cleansing the earth of waste

An online game called Blue Whale has made international headlines for the dangers it poses and is allegedly linked to about 130 deaths. The game is believed to have originated in Russia and is not yet available in South Africa.

Social media analyst and MD of Black Box Theory Yavi Madurai - who has been researching the game - warns that its arrival in South Africa is imminent.

The user downloads the game/app and they go through the process of a challenge. The challenge has 50 days in total and every day is a challenge. And some of these challenges are really sinister.

The challenges gradually become more extreme and on the 50th and final day the user is encouraged to commit suicide.

Madurai says the creator of the game, based in Russia has reportedly come forward with his reason for creating this game.

While there are claims the game is a hoax and is being reported as 'fake news', she says the creator has spoken out about the reasons behind the game.

The creator said he believes he is clearing the earth of waste. Madurai adds that awareness needs to be created and look at how teenagers are using their mobile and digital devices.
