Scientists create artificial bones that could advance marrow transplants

Scientists have developed artificial bone tissues that may potentially provide new bone marrow for patients needing transplants.

Dr Chris Smith, otherwise known as the 'Naked Scientist', explains that the scientific development could help improve the bone marrow transplant procedure.

What this group have done is come up with a way to make artificial miniature bones in dishes.

The study was published in journal PNAS and the team bioengineered tissues with functional bone marrow that can be filled with donor cell, implanted under the skin of mice.

The donor cells survived for at least six months and produce new blood cells in mice, the Naked Scientist explains.
