FW de Klerk may not see eye to eye with Zuma but agrees with him on RET

Former president, FW de Klerk may not see eye to eye with many things that President Jacob Zuma has put on the table for South Africa but he does agree with him on the need of radical economic transformation.

De Klerk also said South Africa needs to discuss the need for an emergency national strategy to turn the education system around, to ensure that future generations are not condemned to the life of unemployment and poverty. De Klerk added that unacceptable inequality needs to also be addressed as well as the deteriorating tone of the racial debate in the country.

Dr. Theuns Eloff Executive Director of the FW de Klerk Foundation says it is unfortunate that the ideas raised by the former president have been shadowed by criticism of his participation in the National Foundations Dialogue Initiative.

The problem is that the debate at the moment is that FW de Klerk is just seen as the last apartheid president.

Instead of taking into account that he was the last apartheid president that started the process to dismantle apartheid.

Dr. Theuns Eloff Executive Director of the FW de Klerk Foundation

Eloff says FW de Klerk made a full statement of his role in apartheid which was accepted by the The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) at the time. Eloff adds that it was eight foundations, such as the Robert Sobukwe Foundation, Chief Albert Luthuli Foundation and The Thabo Mbeki Foundation who began the initiative the dialogue going.

Unless we talk, unless we discuss, unless we have a dialogue we will not reach any solutions and our country will deteriorate further.

Dr. Theuns Eloff Executive Director of the FW de Klerk Foundation

Eloff explains that anyone who supports the constitution of South Africa and the National Development Plan (NDP) should form part of these discussions. He says the idea is to facilitate and support a dialogue that will cut across all boundaries.
