Technobyte: Find out about dangers of WannaCry ransomware

F-Secure Labs has been warning about the exponential growth of ransomware and the dangers of government surveillance tools unleashed into the wild.

Cypto-ransomoware WannaCry — which exploded across the globe on Friday — seems to combine the worst of the dangers implied by both warnings. Users infected by the threat are unable to use their machines unless they pay a ransom in up to $300 in Bitcoin.

In that way it’s crimeware, much like other ransomware. But it takes advantage of a vulnerability that became known due to tools developed by the NSA that were included in a dump by The Shadow Brokers in April this of year.

F-Secure has gotten reports from more than 60 countries. Mikko Hypponen, our chief research officer, calls it “the biggest ransomware outbreak in history.” safeandsavvy.f-secure.com

The Fitbit Alta HR provides you with new health and fitness capabilities that are powered by PurePulse continuous, wrist-based heart rate tracking.

It includes better measuring calorie burn, seeing real-time heart rate zones, viewing resting heart rate trends, and access to more advanced sleep tracking and insights.

A new feature called Sleep Stages has been introduced. Powered by PurePulse, Sleep Stages uses accelerometer data and heart rate variability (the changes in time between beats).

This together with Fitbit’s proven algorithms more accurately estimates how long you spend in light, deep and REM sleep stages, as well as time awake, each night to help you better understand your sleep quality. www.fitbit.com

According to a study conducted through a heartbeat measurement app Cardiogram and the University of California, San Francisco, the Apple Watch is 97 percent accurate in detecting the most common abnormal heart rhythm when paired with an AI-based algorithm.

Cardiogram tested the deep neural network it had built against 51 in-hospital cardioversions (a procedure that restores the heart’s normal rhythm). It reports that it achieved a 97 percent accuracy in the neural network’s ability to find irregular heart activity.

So far this is just a study built on a preliminary algorithm but it holds promise in trying to identify and prevent stroke in the future. Atrial fibrillation, the most common abnormal heart rhythm, causes 1 in 4 strokes. techcrunch.com
