Gender violence in the Spotlight

"Ministry of Women's silence on killings a great disappointment"

Three more murder cases are being investigated after the bodies of young women were discovered in Soweto over the weekend.

Sonke Gender Justice Community education mobilisation manager, Nonhlanhla Skosana, says it is a sad day in Diepkloof where the memorial of Karabo is taking place.

She says it is of great concern that the ministry of women is silent about the spate of female killings. She says the Gender Based Violence Council was dispersed very quietly, which is worrying.

The ministry is headed by Susan Shabangu.

We feel that we should've got some kind of message from her... it is a great disappointment

Nonhlanhla Skosana, Sonke Gender Justice Community education mobilisation manager

Skosana says there are a number of civil societies who would like to engage with the minister and come up with preventative measures on how to keep women safe.
