How a quarry grew into the most sought after Cape estates

As part of #CapeTalkinthe Boardroom series, Breakfast with Kieno Kammies is being broadcast live from Val de Vie Estate in Paarl.

Marketing director at Val de Vie Estate, Ryk Neethling, says the sprawling property has become one of the most sought after places to live in.

He says the place was just a quarry when Martin Venter bought it in the early '90's.

With the help of his friends, Venter managed to pay the R450 million asking price for the property.

Neethling says he moved to Val de Vie after his house in Pretoria was broken into for the sixth time. He fell in love with the place, opened a swim school and got into wine making.

It became my passion - I became a shareholder and joined the team.

Val de Vie directly employs about 150 people and about 40 00 people work on the estate daily, says Neetling.

We all about empowering and upliftment.

Lorraine Hadfield, director of the Val de Vie Foundation, moved to stay on the estate in 2014 and says she really found a place to call home.

It's a caring community that also believes in the culture of sharing and that's what attracted us to coming here.
