Agricultural economist Dr Tracey Ledger says there is a big gap between what farmers are paid by supermarkets and what we are paying when buying food.
She says the business model used by supermarkets and supported by government, which shows that farmers are being squeezed, is the biggest problem.
Ledger says the gap has been steadily widening over the past 20 years.
The problem lies in the policies and the belief that big corporate are the best way for us to get our food, says Ledger. She says we need to start thinking about food as public good, if you don't eat you die.
