Disclosure of party funding will eliminate political capture says ANC Chief Whip

On Thursday the African National Congress (ANC) in Parliament said it wants political party funding regulated, calling for parties to disclose their financial donors.

ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu says democracy is an expensive exercise and political parties are very central to the architecture of South Africa's democracy.

The ANC's view is to implement transparency on public funding of political parties, saying this is already in practice in advanced democratic countries, he added.

We must also ensure that any funding that political parties derive from private funders is made transparent and that there is disclosure from the beneficiaries.

Mthembu says this regulation will help to avoid parties receiving funds from persons or organisations who are 'opposed to democracy'.

He explains that without disclosure 'therein lies a risk of political capture'.

The ANC has remained non transparent for very good reason because their funders have chosen to remain anonymous.

Mthembu goes on to say that once the ad hoc committee is up and running and regulations are set in place, the ANC is ready to make all disclosures.
