"Arrest corrupt people, prosecute people, convict them, send them to jail"

SACP second deputy general secretary Solly Mapaila chats to Redi Tlhabi about the party's imbizo on Friday and its discussion about the ANC.

Everyone in society has the right to discuss the ANC, it is the leading organisation in our country that is leading our government. So the imbizo that we convened is to discuss the broad challenges facing our movement....when we feel our revolution is faltering, and the leadership of the ANC is questioned in society.

Solly Mapaila, SACP second deputy general secretary

he says that is why they invited a broad range of social organisations to come together to reflect on this question and see how they can deal with these challenges.

He says the SACC report speaks about a "parallel government" linked up to the president. He says that system of parallel government is the one that has been "stealing from state owned enterprises and therefore disempowering our capacity as a government to deliver basic services to our people."

He adds that if the president, in this case, has been captured by a group that runs a parallel government, then that is a challenge to the alliance.

On the SACP call for the president to step down?

If he is removed it will allow the ANC to self-correct.

Solly Mapaila, SACP second deputy general secretary

It is a process, he acknowledges. It will take time to solve the problems even if Zuma leaves tomorrow but he says those guilty of corruption need to be arrested.

Arrest people, prosecute people, convict them, send them to jail. Then you are able to send a clear message that we are serious about dealing with corruption and wrong-doing.

Solly Mapaila, SACP second deputy general secretary

He says they have to respect a government that has been handed to them through the vote of the people and do the right thing.
