Gender violence in the Spotlight

Sidney Frankel’s accusers want sexual offences law changed

A group of people allegedly abused by the late philanthropist stock broker, Sidney Frankel, want to change the law of prescription around sexual assault.

Frankel died earlier this year but cases against him - brought by women who claim he abused them decades ago when they were children - continues.

The current law says any sexual offences, excluding rape, expires after a 20-year period.

They want that law to change so that regardless of the time period that has passed, people would be able to bring criminal charges against the alleged abuser, irrespective of how much time has passed between the actual time was committed and coming forward.

Mandy Wiener, EWN reporter

EWN reporter, Mandy Wiener, says Frankel's accusers argue that many people abused as children wait for decades before coming forward to lay charges against their abusers.

Frankel's lawyers, National Director of Public Prosecutions and Minister of Justice are not opposing the applications.
