Gender violence in the Spotlight

Nineteen children have been killed in the Western Cape province in 2017 so far.

Since the start of 2017, nineteen children have been killed in the Western Cape province.

Shanaaz Matthews, Associate professor and director of the Children’s Institute at UCT tells CapeTalk's Africa Melane that it is important to understand that the murders of children in South Africa are particularly high although the Western Cape numbers are slightly higher.

It's children under the age of five that are at most risk and therefore it is important for parents to be vigilant.

Those are the children that are most likely to be killed in the home.

Matthews explains that it is important to note that although home is meant to be the safest space for children it is also the place they are most at risk. Matthews adds that it should be cautioned to who has access to children. She says the problem facing South Africa isn't just social but also structural.

Matthews adds that families who hide and fail to report perpetrators are adding to the safety problems of communities.

We've got to start looking at strategies to make communities safer.
