Reinstating Molefe better than paying him R30m, Minister Brown tells MPs

Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown and Eskom chairman Ben Ngubane are answering questions from Members of Parliament (MPs) about the reinstatement of Brian Molefe as the CEO of Eskom.

Board chairman Ben Ngubane, however, refused to answer MPs' questions, saying he’d been advised by his lawyer not to do so.

Brown has told MPs that reinstating Molefe is far better than paying him the R30 million that the board had agreed upon for his early retirement.

She has also withdrawn her opposition to DA case to stop Molefe continuing in hos role as Eskom CEO.

The minister has also claimed that she had no knowledge of the board decision about giving Molefe early retirement.

Molefe resigned last year in December after the Public Protector’s state capture report showed he had been in regular contact with Ajay Gupta while he was trying to buy the Optimum Mine that supplied Eskom.

At the time of his resignation, Molefe said he was leaving the power utility to clear his name.
