ANC veterans in last ditch attempt to hold a consultative conference before June

ANC veterans are making one last attempt to persuade the party to hold a consultative conference and have the national executive committee (NEC) sitting at the weekend to prioritise this.

Speaking to Business Day this week, party veteran Frank Chikane, said the stalwarts did not believe their concerns raised with the ANC’s top six leaders and its national working committee, have reached the NEC.

ANC leadership agreed that they would have the consultative conference as part of a policy conference scheduled for June.

He spoke to CapeTalk's Africa Melane.

If you want to achieve results to critically look at the organisation and identify the problem areas including who causes the problems and why you cannot go into a 3000 - 4000 meeting to do that. The policy conference deals with issues that come from the branches....I don't think it is the right way to do it and that is what we communicated.

Remember they made a decision against the national party conference. We went to them to appeal and they changed that to accept it.

Chikane says they then reneged on that decision without consulting the veterans.

That is why we went back to say change the decision then they said it is only the NEC that can do that.

But he says he does not believe the matter has gone back to the NEC.

That is why the veterans made a decision that we should appeal to the NEC to actually reverse that decision and organise a consultative conference. It will be about 200 people for instance and it should be leadership before we take it to the branches.
