The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has won the Nquthu Municipality by-election taking 19 seats.
This election comes after a huge amount of campaigning by the ANC in the area, with President Jacob Zuma and Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa both going to the municipal wards.
The by-election was called after no party was able to form an administration following the results of last year’s local elections.
The African National Congress (ANC) won 11 seats, with one seat each going to the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), the National Freedom Party (NFP) and the Democratic Alliance (DA).
The IFP says it hopes to get back KwaZulu Natal by 2021.
The ANC has accepted the results as announced by the Electoral Commission of South Africa.
