Obese kids are 20 times more likely to become obese adults - expert

Medical aid scheme Discovery released the 2016 Healthy Active Kids SA report card on Wednesday.

The research shows that South African children are watching too much TV and eating too much junk food.

Stephen Grootes spoke to Candice Smith, head of Vitality's Nutrition Strategy.

Smith says keeping track of your child's habits may be difficult but limiting TV time is important.

We often underestimate how many habits are formed in childhood and how long lasting those habits are into adulthood, as well as the disease profiles.

Statistics show that boys who are obese between the ages of 4 and 8 years are 20 times more likely to be obese when they are adults... So the habits that are formed in childhood absolutely play a critical role in what we have now seen play out in adulthood.
