Education Professor Ruksana Osman says that changes to the Annual National Assessments (ANAs) will have to be negotiated with unions, teachers and schools in order to get full cooperation.
The highly contested ANAs will be replaced with a new assessment model, the Department of Basic Education has announced.
The ANAs have been reviewed and will no longer be undertaken on an annual basis.
The re-modelled assessment will be called the National Integrated Assessment Framework (NIAF), to be administered for Grades 3, 6 and 9 once every three years.
She explains that the new approach includes a diagnostic assessment element which allows for educators to introduce remedial action or improvement plans.
The professor says the summative assessment of the ANAs were not helpful or constructive in terms of how to implement improvements.

In 2015, at least five teacher unions boycotted the ANAs, citing concerns over their value and administration.
This prompted the department to begin the re-modelling process which is set to be piloted in October this year.
