Activists to join forces for nationwide campaign against gender violence

Civil society organisations, including the Open Disclosure Foundation, have vowed to collaborate on a nationwide campaign against gender-based violence.

This follows the success of the #NotInMyName march in Soweto on Friday.

At least 2 000 demonstrators marched from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Soweto Campus to the Regina Mundi Church.

People as far afield as Kwa Zulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo showed support for the initiative, explains Open Disclosure founder Andile Gaelesiwe.

The purpose of the this march is to say: Not in my name will another girl be kidnapped, rape and burnt. Not in my name will another child be stabbed or murdered for no reason.

Andile Gaelesiwe, Founder of the Open Disclosure Foundation

Gaelesiwe explains that various groups will take the message of fighting gender-based violence across South Africa.

We've now formed a whole group of people who are going to go throughout the country and spread this message, find the perpetrators and make our streets safe again.
