Mbete constitutionally obligated to pursue Parly inquiry into state capture - DA

The DA says National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete is constitutionally obligated to approve a state capture investigation by Parliament through an Ad Hoc Committee.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane says that Parliament is mandated by the Constitution to hold the Executive accountable.

The DA wrote to Mbete to request a full Parliamentary inquiry following leaked e-mails that support claims of state capture.

The e-mails apparently reveal how the controversial family lured senior government officials to take over departments and state-owned entities.

Maimane says that President Jacob Zuma, the controversial Gupta family and other implicated Cabinet ministers must appear before the committee to account for their actions.

He says if Mbete does not approve the Parliamentary inquiry, the opposition party will be forced to take legal recourse.

Maimane explains that the opposition party also plans to lay criminal charges against Zuma and ministers on Tuesday and says the latest Gupta emails may only be the start of more revelations.

The DA leader says he remains hopeful that the motion of no confidence against Zuma in Parliament can still succeed.
