The Western Cape Health Department will be impacting positively on the lives of 67 people in the province as part of their Mandela day initiatives.
Dr Beth Engelbrecht, head of Department at WC Department of Health says they are excited to be embarking on this project, a first of its kind.
Mandela Day is celebrated on the July 18 which is the day former SA president Nelson Mandela was born. On this day, people are encouraged to devote 67 minutes of their time to helping others and doing good.
What we wish to do is to go beyond our current reach of doing 40 additional cataract operations and additional 27 hip replacements...— Dr Beth Engelbrecht, Head of Department at WC Department of Health
She says for hip replacements, 27 people who are currently on the waiting list will be selected and the cataract ops will be done in Eerste River hospital and False Bay hospital.
The initial cost of these procedures was R1.5 million but they have managed to get donations and now the figure has come down to R150 000.
