[LISTEN] Emotional caller feels oppressed as a coloured woman in the workplace

Caller, 'Edith' (not her real name) spoke to Eusebius about feeling disillusioned in the workplace and the challenges she has faced working with men and white men in particular.

She says while the Employment Equity Act opens opportunities for women, legislation is not thoroughly implemented and companies do not provide a safe space for individuals.

If you as a female are trying to get by with all the social aspects you have got to deal with the fact that you are constantly under attack, guess what? You are not going to find any protection in a work environment.

She explains how she has submitted her grievances with top management yet the process has not been properly resolved.

I have been placed in a unit where I work very lovely with my non-white people and then the next thing I am imposed upon by two white males...these two were just placed with me, no meetings, no nothing.

The one that had to report to me, he did not because he said it simply 'you are colored and you are female, it is not going to happen'.

I am now at step three, I have been through senior management level all dominated by males, and every time the grievance is handled incorrectly. I am finding myself in this very frightened place, I cannot lose my job. I cannot be oppressed.

One of my complaints is that my reports were plagiarised. My senior manager takes my reports and puts his white friend's name on it and it's fine. How 20 so odd years later when I am in a corporate place where I have worked hard I am still left disempowered? You are touching my dignity, my humanity, all I wanted was a job to feed my daughter.

Edith says she is a single mom and cannot afford to lose her job, but feels so downtrodden by this constant discrimination.
