Wednesday 31 May is World No Tobacco Day 2017.

According to Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) only 7% of women and 36% of men still smoke.

Dr Noluthando Nomatswerani, Head of the Centre for Clinical Excellence at Discovery says there is progress in reducing the number of smokers in South Africa.

The reduction has been mainly driven by the regulations of smoking that have been introduced as well as imposed taxes.

She says in countries where governments have stepped up and intervened smoking has reduced drastically.

If you look at smokers, there is a huge association with alcohol intake, it's almost a social activity.
