Police Minister Fikile Mbalula announced Lieutenant-General Lesetja Mothiba as the new acting police commissioner on Thursday and that former police commissioner Kgomotso Phahlane has agreed to step down.
EWN reporter, Mandy Wiener says the newly appointed Police Commissioner seems to have a good reputation.
He started working in Limpopo and moved to Alexandra in Johannesburg where he was station commander for seven years. He also worked as Gauteng police commissioner for several years.
Everybody I've spoken to says he has good integrity, he is principled and has good Christian values. He doesn't seem to be in any camp in the police.— Mandy Wiener, EWN reporter
We all know that Kgomotso Phahlane and Berning Ntlemeza were seen as Zuma allies whereas Mothiba seems to be an independent men.— Mandy Wiener, EWN reporter
According to Wiener, former Police Commissioner, Riah Phiyega, has been on paid suspension for the past three years and her contract ends in the next ten days.
It is not yet clear whether Mothiba will be appointed as the permanent Police commissioner, but Minister of Police, Fikile Mbalula had said that he wants the post to be filled by August.
