Still no government contracts with NGOs for transferred Life Esidimeni patients

The committee set up to investigate the tragedy involving mental patients at Life Esidimeni has outlined the progress it has made in implementing the recommendations by the Health Ombudsman following the tragedy in which more than a hundred mentally ill patients died.

The family committee notes its concerns saying that the Gauteng Health Department has still not drafted contracts with the NGO's to which it has transferred patients, four months after starting the process.

Christine Nxumalo, Spokesperson, The Life Esidimeni Family Committee says the committee's concern is that no new contracts have been drafted with the new NGOs.

Our role as the family committee is oversight. So we are going to watch everything that they do.
