Is the lovable Winnie The Pooh a boy or girl?

A Twitter debate over Winnie the Pooh trended overnight and has left some people confused about the childhood character's gender.

How did it start? No one really knows.

CapeTalk/702's Stephen Grootes suggests the character could be gender neutral.

He spoke to Daily Maverick's Rebecca Davis for some clarity on the matter.

The historical bear after which Winnie the Pooh was created was definitely a male bear called Winnipeg in a London Zoo and that was the character the creator AA Milne based Winnie the Pooh on .

But the question of whether the subsequent incarnations of Winnie the Pooh creatively have been male or female, I think is a sort of a value question.

Rebecca Davis, columnist at the Daily Maverick

The Disney version is a little more open perhaps, quite a high voice, not portrayed in these gender stereotypes but conventional wisdom would assume Winnie the Pooh is male.
