#CapeStorm: Road closures and train delays

For those of you still at work and looking to get home, please take note of the following traffic incidents, road closures, and train delays caused by the extreme weather and proceed with caution.

Latest road closures due to storm surge:

Beach Road and Helen Suzman Boulevard, Sea Point.Three Anchor Bay and Beach Roads, Sea Point. Alternate Route: Main Road, Green Point, High Level Road, Sea Point, Regent Road, Sea Point. Baden Powell Drive. Alternate Route: Strandfontein Road, 5th Avenue and Main Road, Grassy Park and Prince George Drive.

Informal Settlement flooding update: Disaster Management officials made assessments in the following areas: Khayelitsha, Nyanga, Gugulethu, Macassar Village, Faure and Wesbank. At this stage we can confirm that 827 structures and 2502 people have been experiencing discomfort due to the cold and wet conditions.

Our NGO partners are providing humanitarian relief in the form of hot meals, blankets and clothing.

Transport and Urban Development Authority (TDA) are providing sandbags and sand to affected communities and they have 24 standby crews that will attends to any flood incidents that could occur.

Recreation and Parks are removing the uprooted trees. Informal Settlements are providing flood kits for the affected dwellings.

The South African Weather Services has advised that the current weather conditions will persist until approximately 5am-6am tomorrow morning where after the showers will subside.

As of 4pm, the major traffic incidents are as follows:

Flooding

Beach Road in Sea Point has flooded, expect intermittent closures.

All Eastbound traffic on Beach Road is being diverted right into Three Anchor Bay Road.

All traffic on Beach Road from Mouille Point is being directed left onto Bill Peters Road, towards the gym.

Fallen trees

The following roads are obstructed by fallen trees:

In Kenilworth at Rosmead Avenue between McKinley and Hampstead (both ways)

In Parow at Frans Conradie Drive at George Stark. On Frans Conradie Drive Eastbound, the left lane is closed.

In Southfield at Ashbury Road between Sidbury and Plymton. The road is closed.

Road closures

The N2 remains closed to traffic between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay due to a large fire.

Chapmans Peak is closed to traffic due to adverse weather conditions.

On Rhodes Drive at Hohenhort Road, an accident has caused one lane to be closed. Stop and Go is in place.

On Baden Powell Drive, report of debris on the roadway. The road is closed between Muizenberg Circle and Strandfontein.

Train updates

Northern Line: The line between Bellville and Wellington has been suspended due to the extreme weather conditions. Shuttle services will operate between Worcester and Wellington.

Trains on the Muldersvlei Line will terminate at Stellenbosch due to the above.

Trains on the Strand Line operating from Cape Town Station will terminate at Eerste River due to a pantograph hook-up at Somerset West

Trains on the Region are delayed in excess of 60+ min due to extreme weather conditions.
