Public Protector can't guarantee full probe into leaked Gupta emails

The Public Protector's office says it may not be able to launch a full investigation into the latest state capture allegations because of capacity constraints.

The Public Protector's office says it will conduct a preliminary investigation into latest claims of state capture emerging from the leaked Gupta emails.

Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane has also announced that she will investigate improper or unlawful enrichment and improper advantage by public officials at Eskom, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa and Transnet.

Public Protector spokesperson Cleopatra Mosene says Mkhwebane will give the matter urgent attention.

The Public Protector will conduct a preliminary investigation to determine the merits of the allegations and the manner n which the investigation will be conducted following the complaint that she received.

Mosene says The Public Protector may not be able to conduct a full probe due to limited resources to investigate.

Mosene rubbished claims that The Public Protector's office is captured.

She was unable to say approximately how long the preliminary investigation would take.
