Anyone, anywhere can now "visit" Nelson Mandela's former prison thanks to Google

Ever wanted to see Nelson Mandela’s prison cell on Robben Island, but live halfway around the world? You’re in luck, thanks to collaboration between Google and the Robben Island Museum.

On Wednesday, Google released Street View images of Robben Island. Now you can take a virtual guided tour via the Web.

We interviewed Robben Island Museum CEO Sibongiseni Mkhize on how the museum and the tech-giant are bringing the heritage to the world through this audio-visual offering.

We’re expecting this to boost tourism to Robben Island. We’re planning to have, by the end of next year, an hourly ferry to and from the island.
