Woman aims to bring a global Fibroids support campaign to SA

Keabetwse Nguza, ambassador of the White Dress Project in South Africa says more support is needed amongst women suffering from symptoms of untreated uterine fibroids - non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb.

Nguza who suffered from fibroids at age 29 has sought to raise awareness of the condition, which she believes needs greater attention.

702's Phemelo Motene spoke to her and Dr. Lawson, a Special Interventional Specialist from the Netcare Seminar Hospital.

The doctors are there, they can only heal you and give you medication but process is not easy. Having those operations and going through the emotional pain.

She says the mission of the White Dress Project is to galvanize support and promote national awareness about the fibroid epidemic among women domestically and globally.

They have gone out to speak to close to 3 000 women and this is what

Lawson says almost three out of every four women in Sub-Saharan Africa suffer from fibroids.

He lists some of the symptoms.

These symptoms are often related to heavy menstrual periods, there is often a lot of pain involved associated with the menstrual cycle, often a lot of bloating, the need to go to the loo often. Sometimes these fibroids get so big that members of the community will turn around to the individual and say when is your pregnancy due...

Unfortunately no one seems to know what causes them, they must be a genetic predisposition.
