Are you having panic attacks? Here's what you need to know

Panic attacks can be very debilitating and have been described as "fear spread all over".

A panic attack is a sudden surge of overwhelming anxiety and fear, explains behavioural psychologist Dr Helgo Schomer.

It's a sudden and overwhelming feeling of acute disabling anxiety.

Dr Schomer explains that some symptoms include:

  • sweating
  • heart palpitations
  • shaking
  • shortness of breathe
  • numbness
  • nausea or dizziness
  • intense fear

He advises that panic attacks are often triggered by an underlying event which has caused someone great stress or trauma.

According to Dr Schomer, understanding the root cause of one's panic attacks can help them better treat their condition.

He offered the following advice on how to treat a panic attack:

  • reduce yourself into a small ball as quickly as possible

Kneel, hands on the floor and scan your whole body.

  • breathe slowly and deeply
  • stop and think
  • relax your muscles
  • think positive thoughts
