MPs want Parly committee to summon Gigaba, Apleni over Gupta citizenship

Home Affairs DG Apleni was meant to answer before Parliament about how the Guptas were granted citizenship, but did not attend.

Members of Parliament (MPs) in the opposition benches have called on a parliamentary committee to summon former Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba.

The MPs want Gigaba to explain how the Gupta family was granted naturalised citizenship in South Africa, reports EWN's Rahima Essop.

Last week, the EFF leaked documents showing that former Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba overturned an initial decision to deny the Guptas.

Gigaba later confirmed that the documents were "genuine", after he earlier called off a press conference on the state of the economy.

MPs also want the Gupta family to provide the motivation that they sent to Gigaba to convince him to approve their citizenship.

There is a paper trail that MPs are requesting in order to put the pieces of the puzzle together and understand how the former minister came to that decision.
