Umuzi equips youth who want to crack it in the creative industry

Andrew Levy is the founder of young, creative incubator Umuzi.

Umuzi is transforming the creative industry by improving access to creative education and careers, explains Levy.

He says Umuzi aims to upskill young people so that they can thrive in the creative industry and make it into a more inclusive space.

Levy says he started Umuzi in 2014 as a response to the difficulty disadvantaged youth experience with accessing the creative industry and high costs of private, specialist universities.

We want to build access to high quality education and high quality opportunities and jobs. Jobs that actually get you somewhere.

Andrew Levy, founder of Umuzi

A lot of young people are ostracised . The opportunities are taken away because the simply can't afford it... There aren't any black people in those spaces...

Andrew Levy, founder of Umuzi

It means that the narratives that we are telling are one-sided. The people living the story, aren't telling the story.

The Umuzi Academy offers a free one-year learnership that produces high-calibre, entry-level designers, copywriters, digital, and multimedia professionals.

The majority of Umuzi alumni get full-time jobs at leading agencies, media, production, and creative organisations, he says.

Photographer and Umuzi alumni Kgomotso Tleane says the Umuzi Academy learnership exposed him to a whole community of creatives and the creative industry.

It really helped me tell my story with more reason.

I'm economically active, and Umuzi was quote instrumental in doing that.

Umuzi alumni Njabulo Mkhize also called in to share how his experience with the academy reinforced the need for more arts education in schools to reduce youth unemployment in South Africa.

The learnership runs over 12 months, including 9 months of on-the-job training at Umuzi, and 3 months working at a partner agency, media or production house. Recruits graduate withe a National Certificate in Advertising.
