"Transformation is non-negotiable but we must mitigate against negative impact"

The African National Congress (ANC) says it has heard concerns raised by the Chamber of Mines, over the revised Mining Charter and that transformation in the mining sector cannot be compromised.

The ANC's subcommittee on economic transformation met with the chamber on Tuesday.

Chamber of Mines CEO Roger Baxter said that they are not against transformation but a more realistic target needs to be set.

ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa says they have agreed that transformation is not negotiable.

Appreciating the issues of common interest, including transformation, transformation is a national imperative..... it was a cordial meeting.

Zizi Kodwa, ANC spokesperson

Last week, the ANC requested an urgent meeting with Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane after he revised the increase of black ownership target to 30%. The party said it was concerned about the impact this could have on jobs in the sector.

We agree with the Chamber of Mines that transformation is non-negotiable. What is important is that as we forge ahead unapologetically. We must as well mitigate against this negative impact and to do so we must make sure that we engage with all stakeholders.
