5 facts about the new SA number plates being implemented this year

No official date has been set for the roll out of South Africa's new number plate legislation.

Last year, government announced plans to introduce new car licence plates in 2017.

Motoring expert Ciro De Siena says authorities have not given an official date for implementation.

He explains that the changes are in an effort to combat number plate fraud and cloning.

They've added security features to prevent duplication.

In the meantime, here's what you need to know:

  • The plates will contain a South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) certification mark on the bottom right and and QR code that contains details of manufacturer.
  • The plates will carry the South African National Flag and the name of the province underneath.
  • Plastic number plates will no longer be used and all new number plates will be aluminium.
  • The new plates will be renewable every 5 years.
  • De Siena says they will cost at least R250 a pop.
