EFF will go back to court if Mbete makes irrational decision on secret ballot

The EFF says Parliamentary Speaker Baleka Mbete needs to have very rational reasons to refuse a secret ballot in a motion of no confidence against President Jacob Zuma.

If Mbete denies a secret ballot irrationally, the EFF has threatened to return to court.

She has to provide reasons.. We will have to hear what the rational reasons are.

Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, EFF spokesperson

If those reasons are not given, we will go back to court.

On Thursday, the ConCourt ruled that Mbete has the discretion to decide on a secret ballot, contrary to her initial claims.

EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi says opposition parties will not accept an open ballot without strong justification and counter-arguments.

Ndlozi adds that any ANC member who celebrates the ConCourt ruling is ignorant.

They've given Parliament to a leadership that has no capacity to interpret the rules.

He says the ANC should be embarrassed that Mbete needed to be told by the court how to do her job.

It is the usual moment of denialism on their part.

The reason the ANC has fought against a secret ballot is because there are many ANC member who want Zuma gone, he says.

Ndlozi explains that if the motion of no confidence fails, the EFF will still hold Zuma accountable through an impeachment process expected to start in September.

Meanwhile, ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu has vowed that the ANC caucus will not vote against Zuma.
