Owners of Ford Figos and Ikons - built in India between August 2004 and March 2012 - received emails on Wednesday to contact the dealership immediately to replace their vehicle's power-steering high-pressure hose.
Business Day Motoring editor, Mark Smythe, says the problem is fairly serious as fumes could go inside the vehicle and in extreme cases could pose a fire risk.
He says research coming out of India where these cars are manufactured says they are not aware of any fires.

So far Ford has recalled 15 600 petrol-engine Figos and Ikons.
Smythe says this kind of hydrolic leaks on the power steering are quite common on a range of vehicles around the world.
