How to prepare your children for when they move out of the house

CapeTalk's Abongile Nzelenzele speaks to educational expert Dr Gillian Moody, Dean at The Independent Institute of Education about the advantages and disadvantages of children staying at home till later stage of adulthood.

Moody says it is a disadvantage when parents still treat their child like a 10 year old while at home because they won't have that sense of responsibility when the times comes for them to stay on their own.

It might allow your child to be financially stable. However, on the negative side you might be delaying the developmental steps that certainly should be taken.

Dr Gillian Moody, Dean at The Independent Institute of Education

The reality is that at some point children will have to leave home but the question is how prepared are they to do that.

According to Moody, parents should be aware that letting go is a developmental step that needs to happen just like when a child start by crawling before they start walking.

She says it is not a good idea to pamper your children today and tomorrow you say you are on your own, it is a step by step process.
